A Man + A Dress

After staying up until 2 am last night watching the fashion documentary "Unzipped" following Isaac Mizrahi as he assembles a comeback collection--F/W 1994-- after abysmal reviews by critics of his Spring show, I've been having a major nineties moment that includes this AMAZING totem dress by the aforementioned.

The fabulous Naomi Campbell in a totem pole-inspired dress by Isaac Mizrahi, F/W 1991. She was the first ever black woman on Time magazine's cover (September 16, 1991).

Close-up of the stunning frock that is completely hand embroidered. The colors and pattern are just gorgeous, but the fit is absolutely divine--Northwestern Native American princess.

I wish he would do a replica of his dress but in print and a casual ball-gown bottom rather than a columned skirt.

Isaac relaxing after shooting "Unzipped". Photographed by Annie Leibovitz for Vogue (December 1995).

If you like fashion, nineties models, or documentaries then you should really watch this. It was directed by Mizrahi's then-boyfriend Douglas Keeve. Currently streaming on Netflix: Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, a very quiet Kate Moss, Helena Christensen, Shalom Harlow, Christy Turlington, former first-lady of France Carla Bruni, Niki Taylor, and Veronica Webb stuck in some thigh-high boots. And Polly Mellen!!!

This is a clip from the film of his 1994 Fall show, shot with the models getting dressed behind a see-thru scrim. Naomi commands the runway like a boss. I wonder if she ever knocked anyone off with those spins. I love the 90's!
